Program Overview

Working in the human services industry is working in the “people” business and is a both a complex and a rewarding career. The Human Service Professionals: Leadership Certificate Course is designed for participants to develop key “soft skills” or “people skills” so they can be successful, launch a new career or, if working already, be promoted into more responsible leadership positions in the human services industry.

The course trains people who work with and lead people to better serve their clients and provide an exceptional environment that allow all parties to work toward their true potential. It is designed to prepare persons who will work or who are working in the human services field with the leadership skills essential to their career success.

The program is designed for students to learn the theory and practical applications of leadership and related communication skills. With this knowledge the student will be able to work more effectively as a professional in their current and future employment.

Course Module Information

Module 1 Leadership Essentials for Human Service Professionals

The first step to improved leadership development skills in service to people, as it pertains to leaders in human services, is for the leader to both understand the field in more detail and also accept and take responsibility for their personal own growth and development as a leader within the field.

This lesson instructs participants so they can understand the importance of self-awareness as it relates to leadership in Human Service Organizations. The lesson builds skills in self-reflection, self-assessment and self-analysis and builds an ability in people to self-manage their leadership skills to deal with emotions, conflict, communication and thinking.

The Lesson focuses on four core elements of self-leadership: management, self-reflection, thinking strategies and personal action. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of Human Service organization requirements and their skill levels in each of these areas and will gain practical skills to use in the workplace and in their personal lives.

The course also explores the concepts of group leadership and what leaders do to serve and lead others.

Module 2 Professional Values and Ethics

Human service leaders promote and encourage the unique values and characteristics of human services. A primary role of a leader is to uphold the integrity and ethics of the profession, promote client and community well-being, and enhance their own professional growth. This lesson teaches the fundamental values of the human services profession including respecting the dignity and welfare of all people, promoting self-determination, honouring cultural diversity, advocating for social justice, and acting with integrity, honesty, genuineness and objectivity.

Module 3 Effective Communication with Clients and Families

This course is for human service leaders so they can develop excellence in interpersonal skills by learning how to communicate and project themselves professionally while working with other professionals, clients, and families of clients. It will explore the communication skills it takes for leaders to step confidently onto any stage and hold the room with an unmistakable presence that distinguishes you as a seasoned speaker and strong leader.  

The course is a hands-on, highly interactive exploration of skills that will give participants the knowledge and skills to use the connection between leadership and communication.

Module 4 Conflict Resolution and Emotional Intelligence

This lesson offers practical tips for leaders aimed at managing conflict at work and teaches an effective conflict management strategy as well as tactics and techniques that can be used in the workplace. This course is for human service leaders so they can develop both understanding and excellence in conflict resolution skills by learning how to recognize and resolve conflict effectively. It will explore importance of emotional intelligence and help leaders develop skills to manage emotions in stressful workplace situations.

Module 5 Cultural Diversity in the Workplace

Leaders in the Human Services are exposed to and often responsible for building a culture of trust and workplace cohesion with a variety of different individuals. This lesson teaches the various elements of diverse workplace leadership and gives leaders the skills to recognize and respond to diversity issues effectively. This lesson on cultural diversity training is designed to assist leaders in dealing with these various situations so that human rights violations do not occur and conflicts are reduced.

This program does not require approval by the Private Training Institutions Branch (PTIB) of the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Training. As such, PTIB did not review this program
