Community Support Worker
Become a Certified Community Support Worker
Community Support Workers are human service professionals who offer various services to people with mental health issues, substance abuse problems, developmental challenges, or physical disabilities.
CSWs may be employed by social service and government agencies, mental health agencies, group homes, shelters, substance abuse centres, school boards, correctional facilities and other organizations.
CSWs work closely with other human service and/or medical professionals to administer and implement a variety of social assistance programs and community services.

The Eclipse Community Support Worker program prepares graduates for a rewarding career working with and caring for people of all ages in community programs, residential programs, and in schools as education assistants. Students participate a practicum.
CSW Program Overview:
The Community Support Worker Certification provided by Eclipse College is fully vetted by subject matter experts at PTIB. The program meets the standards set by the BC government body.
This intensive 4 month program is designed to get you ready for the workforce.
Program Modules:
CSW 100: Foundations
This course introduces students to CSW professional activities, including a critical examination of the ethics, values and historical development of the profession and human services.
CSW 102: Communication Skills
This course in communications enables the student to develop interpersonal communication skills to enhance their professional and personal relationships. An introduction to counselling skills is also developed
CSW 103: Effective Writing
Effective writing is an absolutely essential professional skill for CSWs. This course strengthens student skills to prepare them to write at a professional level
CWS 104: Health and Wellness
This course is designed to provide students with an understanding of the holistic health care needs of individuals in the community including those with significant illnesses as well as those with physical disabilities
CSW 105: Mental Health
This course looks at both traditional and more recent concepts of mental health and current approaches to working with persons served. It considers how the definition of mental health has evolved. The course also considers the mental health concerns of CSW’s persons served.
CSW 106: Professional Development
This course provides training in computer software skills, and other related industry certifications that are required for entrance into the profession.
CSW 107: Addictions and Substances
This course provides students with an overview of theories and models in the field of substance abuse and best supporting practice.
CSW 108: Working with Youth and the Elderly
This course introduces students to the contemporary study of youth and the elderly from a lifespan perspective.
CSW 109: Crisis Intervention
Crisis intervention is an immediate and short-term response aimed at assisting individuals in a crisis situation in order to restore equilibrium to their lives. This course provides students with an introduction to the theory and practical procedures of crisis intervention.
CSW 110: Supporting Independence
This course explores basic medical and health care theory, concepts and terminology required to provide support to people in care. This course will present students with basic medical assistance information. Students learn about the practical day to day needs and requirements of clients in care.
CSW 111: Working in Social Service Organizations
In this course students learn about how to work effectively in a social service/health care organization and how organizations function.
CSW 112: Capstone Project
On successful completion of all other courses in the program, students will complete a capstone project under the supervision and direction of the course instructor. With the guidance of their instructor, students pursue an independent research project on a set of questions or a problem related to an area in CSW they would like to pursue professionally
CSW 113: Practicum Hours
Students are placed within a variety of different supervised working environments. This is opportunity for hands on experience as well as an opportunity to consider the different options for employment after completion of the CSW program.
